Common questions

Questions about online chess lessons

What to expect from coaching, how booking works, and how I keep students and parents informed.

Getting started

Who do you coach?

My main focus is ambitious juniors, club players and tournament competitors who already play chess and want to improve. I also work with adult improvers. Every student receives a personal approach based on their level, goals, schedule and learning style.

My coaching background and student achievements

What level of player is your coaching best suited to?

My coaching is best suited to players who already know the rules and play games, whether online, at a club or in tournaments. The focus is on understanding their decisions, addressing recurring mistakes and developing their play. Share a few recent games and your goals when you get in touch so we can discuss whether the lessons are a good fit.

My approach to junior coaching

How do online chess lessons work?

Each private lesson is a live, one-to-one session with me on Zoom. We use a shared Lichess board to examine positions and games. I ask the student to explain their ideas and work through decisions, rather than simply watch an explanation.

How long is a lesson?

A standard private lesson lasts 60 minutes. The first lesson is also a full 60-minute class, not a short introductory call.

How do I book a lesson?

New students can book a discounted first lesson. In India, payment comes before choosing a lesson slot. International students choose a time and then complete the trial payment. Existing students can use the scheduling page. After a few sessions, we can also discuss a regular weekly time.

Is the first lesson free?

No. It is a discounted, paid 60-minute lesson with no package commitment. The USD first-lesson price is $5; the India price is ₹1,850. Your local price is shown before payment.

What do I need to get started?

You need a stable internet connection, Zoom and a Lichess.org or Chess.com account. I usually use the Lichess interactive board during lessons. If these tools are unfamiliar, I can explain how we will use them.

Pricing and payments

What are your rates?

For USD pricing, the 10-hour plan is $50 per hour ($500 total), the 5-hour plan is $55 per hour ($275 total), and a single lesson is $60. In India, the 10-hour plan is ₹3,700 per hour (₹37,000 total). The pricing page shows all plans and the available currencies.

Do you offer packages?

Yes. You can choose a 10-hour plan, a 5-hour plan or a single pay-as-you-go lesson. The 10-hour plan has the lowest hourly rate. You do not need to buy a package to try the first lesson.

How do I pay?

Use the payment options shown on the booking or pricing page. Available methods depend on your region and the checkout used. India package payments may use UPI, while the first-lesson payment uses Razorpay. Confirm your plan, currency and total before paying.

Can I reschedule or get a refund?

Lessons can be rescheduled under the rescheduling policy. Payments are non-refundable. Please read the policy before booking, and contact me if you need help changing a lesson.

Lesson content

What will we cover in a session?

That depends on the student's goals and current weaknesses. Sessions may include game analysis, opening choices, calculation, tactics, strategy, endgames, tournament preparation or study planning. I adapt the lesson to immediate needs and long-term improvement.

Do I get study material or homework?

Yes. I provide personal notes and any homework or follow-up work appropriate to the student. The post-lesson update explains what we covered and what to work on next.

Will I get a training plan?

After the first two or three lessons, once I have a clearer picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses, I provide more specific guidance for a longer-term training plan. The work is chosen to fit the student's needs and available study time.

Can you help with tournament preparation?

Yes. I help students with practical preparation, opponent research and decisions at the board. During important scholastic tournaments, I also offer a complimentary 15 to 30 minute Zoom session to review games, discuss preparation and give practical advice.

Do you guarantee rating gains or tournament results?

No. My role is to identify the student's needs, teach clearly, assign useful work and support consistent improvement. Results depend on effort, time, tournament practice and other individual circumstances. The achievements on this site are examples, not guarantees.

Lessons and support

Do parents receive progress updates?

Yes. After every class I send a WhatsApp update covering how the lesson went, the student's progress, lesson notes and any homework. Parents can also ask questions by WhatsApp or email and have a complimentary 15-minute call each month to discuss progress and next steps.

Are lessons recorded?

On request, I can record and share the Zoom session along with notes or PGN files after the lesson.

How do you communicate between lessons?

WhatsApp is my main channel for lesson summaries and day-to-day communication. Email works too. I typically respond within 24 to 48 hours.

Do you coach adults as well as children?

Yes. Adult lessons are adapted to your goals, recurring mistakes and the time you can spend on chess. I work with online players, club players and adults preparing for over-the-board tournaments.
