How I work with junior chess players

I am IM Adarsh Tripathi, an International Master and full-time chess coach. My focus is on juniors who already play chess and want to understand their games more deeply, from club players to national and international tournament competitors.

A student's own games are often the most useful starting point. They show how the player thinks, where their understanding is strong and which mistakes keep coming back. That helps us decide what deserves attention in the lessons and between them.

Choosing what to work on

Two players with similar ratings can need quite different training. I adapt the examples, questions and pace to the student's games, experience and goals. Enjoying the lesson and being asked to think seriously should go together.

Developing a club player

For a child who already plays regularly, their games help us identify recurring mistakes. Lessons may focus on calculation, decisions, opening understanding or endgame technique.

Preparing for tournaments

For ambitious juniors, coaching can include game analysis, opening preparation and practical tournament guidance, with study work matched to the student's needs.

What a lesson looks like

We meet on Zoom and use a shared Lichess board. Your child works through positions, discusses their choices and receives feedback. A lesson might involve their recent games, an instructive example or exercises chosen for a specific area of improvement.

After the first two or three lessons, I can offer more specific guidance for a longer-term training plan. The aim is to give your child work they understand and can follow between classes.

How parents stay informed

After every class, I send a personal WhatsApp summary: how the lesson went, what we worked on, progress and any homework. You can ask questions by WhatsApp or email, and a complimentary 15-minute parent call each month gives us time to discuss the wider picture.

Progress is not only a rating change. The lesson notes also describe what your child understands, where they are struggling and what we will work on next.

Coaching experience

Alongside private coaching, I have taught through Magnus Chess Academy and authored instructional work for Chessable and TheChessWorld. My students' recent achievements include World Cadets representation, US SuperNationals medals and the U16 Girls African Youth title.

Those results are examples, not a promise of a particular outcome for your child. The right coaching relationship also depends on how the student responds to the lessons and the work between them.

Discussing the right fit

The first class is a full 60-minute lesson. We explore your child's level and goals, work on chess together and identify useful next steps. You can try the teaching approach before deciding whether to continue.

You will need Zoom, a stable internet connection and a chess account for the shared board. When you get in touch, include your child's age, playing experience, tournament goals if any, and availability. Local pricing is shown before payment.

Lesson prices and the coaching FAQ cover the practical details. My chess guides offer a sense of how I explain the game.
